Router bits are made from many different materials.  The material the router bit is manufactured from will determine the life & performance of the bit.

High Speed Steel Router Bit (HSS): inexpensive & best for routing softwood & light plastics.

Carbide Tipped Router Bits: these bits stay sharp longer & a better choice for hardwood & other hard materials.
